Floor Refinishing in North Alabama
If you have existing hardwood floors that are scratched, dull, worn, or just the wrong color — refinishing is almost always the smarter move before you budget for replacement. Refinishing costs $3–6 per square foot in North Alabama. New hardwood installation costs $6–12 per square foot. On a 1,200 sq ft home, that's a difference of $3,600 to $7,200.
Refinishing sands the existing floor back to bare wood, removes every scratch and stain from the surface, and applies new stain and finish coats that bring the floor back to like-new condition. You can keep your existing color or go completely different — lighter, darker, or a modern tone that transforms the feel of the home.
Florence and Decatur homeowners with older homes particularly benefit from this. Many historic Shoals-area and Morgan County homes have original oak or heart pine floors under layers of carpet that refinish beautifully for a fraction of what new hardwood would cost.
Can Your Floors Be Refinished?
Solid hardwood can be refinished as long as there's at least 1/16" of wood above the tongue and groove. Most 3/4" solid hardwood can be refinished 7–10 times over its lifetime. If you have original floors from a 1950s, 60s, or 70s North Alabama home, they almost certainly qualify.
Engineered hardwood can be refinished 1–2 times depending on the veneer thickness. Thin-veneer engineered hardwood (less than 2mm) may not be refinishable at all. A contractor will measure and assess during the free estimate.
LVP, laminate, tile, and carpet cannot be refinished — they must be replaced when worn. This is one of the few genuine advantages solid hardwood has over those alternatives over a 30–50 year time horizon.
Floor Refinishing Cost in North Alabama
| Service | Cost Per Sq Ft | 200 sq ft room |
|---|---|---|
| Sand & Refinish (same color) | $3 – $5 | $600 – $1,000 |
| Sand, Stain & Refinish (new color) | $4 – $6 | $800 – $1,200 |
| Screen & Recoat (light refresh) | $1.50 – $3 | $300 – $600 |
| New Hardwood Installation (comparison) | $6 – $12 | $1,200 – $2,400 |
Screen and recoat is a lighter option — it scuffs the existing finish and applies a new top coat without full sanding. It works for floors that are dull but not deeply scratched. Full sanding is required for floors with deep scratches, stains, or color changes.

- Assessment & Measurement
Contractor measures the floor, checks wood thickness to confirm refinishability, and assesses for major repairs like board replacements or nail holes that need filling.
- Sanding
The floor is sanded in stages — rough, medium, and fine grit — removing the old finish and scratches down to bare wood. Dustless sanding systems keep the mess manageable.
- Stain Application (if changing color)
Stain is applied evenly and wiped before it dries. You can test stain samples on a small area before committing to the full floor. Allow 24 hours for stain to dry before finish coats.
- Finish Coats
2–3 coats of polyurethane or water-based finish are applied, with light sanding between coats. Water-based finishes dry clear and faster. Oil-based finishes add a warm amber tone and take longer to cure.
- Cure Time
Stay off the floors for 24 hours after the final coat. No rugs or furniture for 7 days. No wet mopping for 30 days. Full hardness cure takes 30 days.
